SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Read James 3:1-12. Why does this passage use a reference to a bridle? What is the significance of it? If NO ONE can tame the tongue and it is full of poison, how can it be bridled? What part do we play in this and how can we begin to produce good things instead of poison? Discuss as a group.

2. Read Psalm 141:3 & 1 Thessalonians 5:11. Some of the smallest things are the most powerful, such as the tongue. According to these passages, how can you use words and your tongue to make a positive impact?

3. Read Matthew 12:34-37. Sometimes we believe that just because we ask for forgiveness for things, we are no longer held accountable for the things we say. This passage speaks differently regarding this. This puts in greater perspective the responsibility we carry for the things that we say. How can we be better justified for the things that we speak? Discuss some ways to honor God with our mouths.

4. Read James 3:13-18. According to these scriptures, list some of the ways that we can use wisdom and what the fruits of wisdom in these situations are. How can we better seek the wisdom that comes from God?

5. Read Proverbs 14:12, Proverbs 4:7, Proverbs 13:20. Discuss a time in your life that you acted upon something because it seemed like it was a good way to respond, but it ended up actually being more destructive than helpful. Why do we tend to think that we always have the answer to things? How can we do better about seeking the way that God would like for us to respond in these situations? Discuss.

6. Read 1 Corinthians 13. This passage carefully outlines how we are supposed to behave in every situation and with every single person. Read this passage out loud together then discuss some areas where each of you may personally struggle.
