SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Read James 1:1-4. How can we allow our trials and the testing that we endure transform us and produce endurance in us? What are some of the personal trials you are walking through right now in your life? What do you think God is doing in you through them? Discuss.

2. Read John 16:7 & Psalm 34:17-19. We are never alone in our trials/temptations. Who is the Helper and how does he help us? When we think we are alone, God always sends help and comfort right when we need it. Discuss a time when you were completely broken and God sent help to you.

3. Read James 1:2-3 & Romans 8:26-28. How is it even possible to feel “joy” when your faith is being tested and you are going through difficult things? Discuss a time when you have been in such a dark place that you couldn’t even pray. How did the Holy Spirit come through in this situation for you? Discuss ways that you can learn to lean on the Holy Spirit in those times of weakness.

4. Read James 1:3-8. Have you ever asked God for something, but you had difficulty believing in Him to do it? God wants us to receive all of His promises. How can we be assured we are able to walk in the blessings that He has planned for us, according to these passages? Discuss as a group.

5. Read James 1:12-17. We can know for certain that ALL of us are going to go through trials and to be tempted; however, we still choose whether we sin or not. Our sin is not Satan’s fault but our own personal choices. How can we prevent ourselves from being deceived by him, according to these scriptures?

6. Read Hebrews 4:15-16, James 1:15-16 & 18-21, & John 14:15. Jesus had the same temptations we all have and can relate to the same troubles that we have walked through. How is His example comforting to you personally? What can you learn by studying how He overcame sin? How can we live according to that example? Discuss some struggles and some ways that you have overcome your own trials and tempations with the group.
