Week 6 - Idols Of The Heart
INTRODUCTION
You and I were wired to worship God. Everything about us was
made to live completely dependent on Him! In the Fall of Man, this
propensity to worship God was redirected to the things of the world
- mankind worshiped idols instead. We may think of an idol as a
carved statue, but an idol is also anything we desire more than God.
In this session, we’ll learn about what it means to be a worshiper.
We’ll discover how we mistakenly take the passing things in the
world and make them into the ultimate thing - seeking satisfaction in
the created rather than the Creator - and find ourselves empty and
enslaved instead. We’ll discover how Jesus is the better answer to
all our desires and seek to surrender our idols to His Lordship.
THEME
To search our hearts and discover the idols that hold our affections,
recognize they cannot fulfill the needs of our soul, and to surrender
them to the Lordship of Jesus.
OUTCOMES
- To understand the definition of worship.
- To understand the definition of idolatry.
- To recognize how idols fail to meet the needs of our soul, ultimately
enslaving us and hindering our walk in Freedom and our relationship
with God.
- To recognize that Jesus died to set us free, meet our every need,
and fulfill our every desire.
OPENING THOUGHT
We all have things that we are passionate about, something that we
seek comfort in, or something that we really enjoy! What’s something
that occupies your thoughts every day? What’s something that you
couldn’t go one day without doing?
POST VIDEO QUESTIONS
- Think about the greatest being in the universe initiating and
pursuing a relationship with you. How does that make you feel?
- Why do you think that we look to things other than God to satisfy us?
- What are things that we idolize as a culture?
- What are some things that a person could potentially idolize in their
life?
- How could idolizing the following things be potentially destructive?
How can surrendering each of these things to Jesus change how we
relate to them in a God-honoring way?
*Spouse *Political Party *Family *Vehicles *Sports Teams
ACTIVATION
Spend some time with the group and ask each person in silent
prayer and reflection to ask God the following:
- Does anyone or anything hold a place in my heart that was only
designed for God?
- Write down any area(s) the Holy Spirit is revealing where you have
placed someone or something in His place.
- What lie am I believing regarding this relationship, activity, or thing
- What place in my heart am I trying to fill with it that only You can fill?
Write the truth the Lord has revealed to you about that lie. The Lord
may reveal His Truth to you through Scripture, give you a word or
vision from the Holy Spirit, or speak to you through a Christian brother
or sister. However the Lord reveals this to you, it will always agree
with His Word.

PRAYER
Father, thank you for being my loving Creator. Thank You for making
me to be in relationship with You. You alone are worthy of worship.
I want to live my life for you! Lord, thank You for revealing the idols
of my heart, and the lies I have believed about them. I confess that
I hold the idol of (list relationship, activity, or thing here), that I have
believed a lie about it, and surrender it to your Lordship. Jesus, you
are everything I need. All I want is You. Help me to see the world
and the people, activities, and things in it as You see them. Change
my heart so that I steward them to Your Glory. Help me to seek You,
worship You, and give Glory to You alone! Amen!
